A River Bends Until It Breaks

The Artist

Genevieve Flores is a San Diego Native musician and theatrical storyteller whose work explores relationships with nature, ancestry, belonging, and emotional well-being. She combines original songwriting with musical theater to create performances that connect personal experiences with larger environmental questions. Her father’s visual artistry and childhood explorations of local canyons have shapes her imagination and the creative world she plays within. Today, learning about her family’s history in Mexico informs both her artistic voice and her understanding of her heritage. Flores has independently produced one show a year for the past four years, developing one-woman performances while balancing her creative practice with other work. Her current projects include the album 12th House on the Right and A River Bends Until It Breaks. She also envisions bringing artists together through Let’s be eARThical, an initiative focused on nature-inspired exhibitions and environmental learning.

The Project

Genevieve Flores will create A River Bends Until It Breaks, an album of eight connected songs accompanied by short films exploring the Tijuana River watershed. Combining original music and theatrical storytelling, the project will connect the river’s environmental challenges with Flores’s exploration of her family history and Mexican heritage. The river will serve as both a subject and a storytelling voice, inviting audiences to consider how waterways connect people, sustain life, and carry the consequences of human decisions. Songs will move between environmental concerns and personal experiences of ancestry, belonging, and loss. Working with local songwriters, musicians, and a professional producer, Flores will develop the music alongside films that give visual context to each song. She also plans to create music with family members during a visit to Sinaloa, Mexico. The project will culminate in a planned outdoor performance at dusk, with Flores and a live band performing in front of projected films. The music and videos will also be available to stream. Through this shared musical experience, Flores hopes to deepen connections among people living in the watershed and encourage greater care for the land and water they share.
