Pinta Pinta

The Artist

My name is Melissa Sánchez Meza; I am a Mexican multidisciplinary artist. I am 38 years old and have dedicated my life to professional performing arts for more than 20 years in Tijuana, Baja California. I am currently continuing my exploration of my own artistic language, inspired by sensitivity, childhood, wonder, the body, and my own life experiences—all embodied through a border-based way of thinking and feeling. My career has been shaped and inspired by classical and contemporary dance, performance creation, cultural management, and the exploration of artistic languages that involve embroidery, makeup, somatic movement, hybrid puppetry, and alternative pedagogies inspired by art education.

The Project

Pinta pinta is the name of my project. It’s a workshop inspired by dance, painting, and storytelling—and by designing aesthetic experiences for babies, children, and their families. I believe it is of the utmost importance to foster and uphold children’s right to access art from the earliest years of life. Pinta pinta consists of a series of four free workshops for babies and children ages 8 months to 3 years in the cities of Tijuana and San Diego. I will create a visual record of what takes place during the workshops, which will be presented as an exhibition featuring the works created collectively by the children and their families. The goal is to highlight what happens when children have access to artistic experiences from an early age.
