Under The Bridge

The Artist

Herbert Siguenza is a playwright, actor, director, and founding member of Culture Clash, the Chicano/Latino performance trio established in 1984. For more than four decades, he has created original theater that explores identity, history, culture, and social justice through humor and storytelling. His process begins with listening. Community interviews, archival research, and conversations with residents provide the foundation for work that brings overlooked histories and everyday experiences to the stage. He has worked with neighborhood cultural organizations and major regional theaters across the country. As an artist and activist, Siguenza seeks to expand whose stories are told in American theater and help audiences see their lives reflected onstage. His 2023 residency at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center resulted in Resistance Creates Beauty, a collaborative music-video series rooted in the stories of Logan Heights residents.

The Project

Herbert Siguenza will develop his first full-length musical, Under The Bridge, drawing on the histories, humor, and everyday experiences of residents in Logan Heights and Barrio Logan. Created with San Diego composer Fred Lanuza, the musical will explore how a community’s stories can be preserved and shared through theater and song. The project builds on Resistance Creates Beauty, a series of 14 music videos Siguenza created during his 2023 residency at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center. Based on community interviews, those videos explored the movement to establish Chicano Park and its lasting impact. The musical will broaden that focus to include more of the people and experiences that have shaped the surrounding neighborhood. Artists Count will support the first phase: additional interviews and historical research, script and music development, and readings with local actors and singers. Community feedback will help guide revisions throughout the process. This phase will culminate in a free public staged reading at the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, followed by an audience discussion. The reading will introduce the developing story and songs, laying the groundwork for a future workshop and full production.
