Transit Codes

The Artist

Carime San Juan is a visual artist and educator from Tijuana, Baja California, with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Her work is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses painting, mixed media, transfer, collage, sound art, video, performance, and installation. In her creative process, chance and experimentation play a fundamental role, giving rise to images in which abstraction, figuration, and symbolic elements linked to the subconscious and memory converge. Her work addresses social, cultural, and human themes, with a special interest in history, identity, and collective memory. Influenced from an early age by Abstract Expressionism and figurative art, San Juan has developed her own artistic language through intuition, artistic research, and work with diverse materials and media. Her body of work is distinguished by a constant search for expressive possibilities, through which she constructs images and narratives that invite reflection on individual and collective experience.

The Project

My project “Transit Codes” originated in Tijuana and seeks to make internal borders visible from within; I aim to dismantle them and reassemble them visually based on their contrasts and tensions. Instead of reproducing the most recognizable images of Tijuana—the international border, multiculturalism, or violence— I want to observe what goes unnoticed: cracks in the pavement or the lack thereof, fences, building facades, excessive wiring, hillsides overflowing with houses, dangerous streets, affluent neighborhoods, working-class neighborhoods, neighborhood codes, contrasts between the clean and the dilapidated, and visible traces of class in the urban landscape. These elements reveal differences in access, safety, a sense of belonging, and living conditions.
