Paint with organic materials

The Artist

Noemi Hernández Enríquez is a visual artist, educator, and researcher of painting materials. She holds a Master’s degree and a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her practice encompasses painting, drawing, and mixed media, with a special interest in experimenting with natural pigments, organic binders, and traditional techniques, such as egg tempera and nopal-based paint. She has presented solo and group exhibitions at various cultural venues in Baja California and Mexico City, and has extensive teaching experience, having led art workshops at institutions such as CECUT, CEART, UABC, the Tijuana School of Visual Arts, and the Antigua Academia de San Carlos. In 2025, she served as a juror for the Artistic Residencies of the Sistema de Creación and directed the “Arte hecho en México” (Art Made in Mexico) program (2023–2025), dedicated to promoting Mexican artists. Her current work combines research, artistic production, and the revival of traditional techniques, exploring the expressive possibilities of painting materials from a contemporary perspective.

The Project

My project involves research into natural painting, that is, using plants from the region and minerals to create dyes, inks, and pigments that can be applied to paper, fabric, and other surfaces using binders such as egg tempera, oil paint, watercolor, and nopal, among others.
