Good To Be Seen

The Artist

Shellina Hefner is a San Diego based theater artist whose work connects storytelling, community voices, and social justice. She discovered theater while studying English literature in college, when exposure to verbatim theatre and works like The Vagina Monologues inspired her to change her major. When transitioning into professional theatre, she first worked on documentary theatre and human trafficking awareness pieces, building her love for theatre for social change. Since then, she has written and directed pieces connected to homelessness, environmental awareness, and protest, developing a practice rooted in bringing community members’ own words and experiences to the stage and connecting hundreds of artists. Shellina has also developed work for and with young artists and audiences. Her long-term goal is to continue to grow with arts organizations that connects activism with art-making and support new work responding to the world around it.

Shellina Hefner

The Project

Shellina Hefner will create Good To Be Seen, a documentary theater production built from interviews with women across San Diego County. Using participants’ own words, the work will explore girlhood, identity, resilience, joy, and the experiences that shape women’s lives. Hefner will gather stories from women of different ages, cultures, backgrounds, and identities. She will then shape the interviews into a stage production that brings their distinct perspectives into conversation, examining both shared experiences and important differences. Inspired by Cynthia MacAdams’s photography collection Emergence and Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, the project will ask whose stories are recognized, how women are shaped by expectations and institutions, and what it means to be truly seen. The project will create paid opportunities for researchers, creative collaborators, and performers, with an emphasis on including women artists. Through active listening and live storytelling, Good To Be Seen aims to offer an honest, multifaceted portrait of women in the region and invites audiences to consider how they support the women in their own communities.
